Student Temporary Services FAQs

Q: Do I have to be a Full-Time Student to work in the STS Program?
A: No, you do not have to be a Full-Time Student to work in the Student Temporary Services. You do however, have to be registered for at least 6 credit hours during the Fall and Spring Semesters in order to be a Student employee in the Student Temporary Services.

Q: Are Students able to work during the Summer in the STS Program?
A: Yes, Students who were registered in the Spring semester or will be an incoming Student in the for the Fall Semester are eligible for the Student Temporary Services. You are not eligible if you have graduated from the University.

Q: Do I have to have Federal Work-Study to be hired for a position through the STS Program?
A:No, you do not have to have Federal Work-Study to be hired through the STS Program. Students who do not have Federal Work-Study are able to apply as well as students who do have Federal Work-Study. Having Federal Work-Study does not give priory over students that do not have Federal Work-Study. We hire based upon the skills that are required for the position.

Q: What is Federal Work-Study?
A: Federal Work-Study is a grant that the U.S Federal Government offers to Students in need in order to help finance the cost of College through offering the ability to work on-campus. Departments utilize the funds in order to hire a student to perform a given job. Students who fall within a specific income bracket and are U.S citizens or Permanent Residents are able to apply for these funds. Q: Does the STS Program Offer Graduate Assistantships?
A: Although Graduate Level students are encouraged to apply, please know that all of the positions that become available through STS are Undergraduate Level positions. Therefore, the pay for positions offered through the STS Program is according to the University Student Employee Wage Plan. The Student Temporary Services Program does NOT offer Graduate Assistantships, Research Assistantships or Graduate Hourly positions. Q: What are the pay-rates for positions in the STS Program?
A: The starting pay-rate for positions in the STS program is $8.68/hr. The pay increases based upon the type of job it is. The pay-rates are based upon the University Student Employment wage plan which can be accessed through the Student Employment website. http://studentemployment.uic.edu/wage_plan.shtml

Q: Are Jobs only available on East Campus?
A: Available positions through the STS Program are located on the East and West sides of Campus.

Q: Do I need to have prior work experience in order to be hired through the STS Program?
A: No, you do not have to have prior work experience to work in the STS Program. However, there are some positions that require specific skills sets in order to complete the job efficiently.

Q: Do I need to have a resume to be hired through the STS Program?
A: Yes, you will need to upload your resume when you complete the STS Program Pre-Screen Questionnaire. If you currently do not have a resume, you can visit one of our Career Counselors in the Career Services Office, located in the Student Services Building, suite 3050. One of our Career Counselors can set an appointment with you to review your resume and give recommendations on how to organize your prior work, volunteer or internship experience in a resume. You can also visit a Career Counselor during walk-in hours, which are posted on the Career Services website http://careerservices.uic.edu/ .
