Q: What is the Student Temporary Services (STS) program?
A: The STS program helps students find temporary, flexible on-campus jobs that vary in type and length of time.
Q: How long does a job assignment typically last?
A: A job assignment can last anywhere from one-day, two-weeks, a month or even a whole semester, depending on how long a department needs the student to work.
Q: What types of jobs does the STS program have?
A: Although it can vary, some examples that are generally requested include general office aide, data-entry and laboratory aide.
Q: How much does an assignment pay an hour?
A: The starting STS program rate is $8.68 an hour. However, some job assignments pay more per hour depending on the job duties and the hiring unit.
Q: Do I need to have federal work-study in order to participate in the STS program?
A: No. You do not have to have federal work-study to participate in the STS program. However, you do have to be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours (3 credit hours for the summer semester).
Q: Do I need to have prior work experience to obtain a job?
A: No. You do not need to have prior work experience to obtain a job. However, keep in mind that any volunteer or internship experience are also valuable forms of work-related experience.
Q: Is it possible for a temporary position to become permanent?
A: Yes. Some STS positions have the potential of becoming permanent—upon the employing units decision.
Q: How do I apply to the STS program?
A: Come in to the Student Employment office, located at 1200 W. Harrison, suite 2100 and fill out an application. You will then be scheduled for a 1 hour pre-employment interview with the STS Coordinator.
