Question: How do I find a job?
Answer: Log in to www.uiccareers.com, go to "Jobs," then click on "Advanced Search" and search for jobs under the different position types. Apply as instructed by the job posting.
Question: Does it really matter what I say when calling a prospective employer?
Answer: Yes. The department is screening you the minute you start talking. Make it count! Speak clearly!
Question: Do I really need to get dressed up for an on-campus job?
Answer: No, although wearing clean, presentable clothing helps! See our tips on interviewing....
Question: How do I create a resume if I have never worked before?
Answer: You can list coursework, volunteer and other experience that you have completed and your skills. See the Resume Tips for specific information.
Question: Does volunteer experience really matter?
Answer: Yes. Employers look for anyl work experience, paid or unpaid..
Question: Does involvement in student organizations really make a difference on my resume?
Answer: Yes. Being part of any organization helps, especially if you hold an office or are an active member. You can use it to show work experience and skills.
Question: What do I do with my references?
Answer: List your references on a separate sheet of paper. Format it the same way as your resume. Just make sure the people you have listed as your references know to expect a call from prospective employers and that they will provide a good reference.
Question: Should I call if I am running late for an interview?
Answer: Yes, yes, and yes!
Question: I am no longer interested in going to an interview. Should I simply not show up?
Answer: Call if you are no longer interested. You never know when you might interview with that same person again.
Question: Do I need a resume for an on campus job interview?
Question: I just got hired on campus. What should I do?
Answer: You need to get a Student Employee Requisition Form from your hiring supervisor. Once you have done this, you need to come to our office to complete your employment paperwork and show the appropriate employment documents. You must bring original documents (Immigrations Reform and Control Act of 1986). All of this must be completed BEFORE you can start working!
Question: Today is my first day at work. Once I get there, what should I do?
Answer: Ask you supervisor if there is a departmental handbook and/or guidelines. Ask if there is a dress code or any other pertinent information that you should know about.
Question: I worked more than 8 hours in a day. Am I supposed to get overtime?
Answer: Make sure that your supervisor knows first that you will be exceeding 8 hours in a day. If the overtime is approved, you are entitled to overtime.
Question: I worked 4 hours in a shift. Am I entitled to a lunch? What if I work 6 hours?
Answer: Student employees who work over 5 continuous hours are entitled to a 1/2 hour unpaid lunch. Talk to your supervisor for specific departmental policies.
Question: How am I supposed to dress at work?
Answer: Overall, you should be dressed neatly and appropriately. Talk to your supervisor for specifics, especially if you work in a reception area/ front desk.
Question: I have to study for an exam. Do I need to get approval to miss work or should I simply not go to work?
Answer: You should plan your study and work time. If you still need time off, notify your supervisor at least 3 days in advance.
Question: I have Federal Work Study (FWS). Am I supposed to have taxes deducted out of my check?
Answer: Yes, taxes are deducted regardless of whether you have financial aid or not. It all depends on what you claim on your W2 forms. You can always make changes to your allowances through the Nessie system (available under LINKS).
